Herbert Schönfeld (journalist)

Herbert Schönfeld (born July 29, 1919 in Oschatz ) is a former German journalist and politician . For many years he was General Secretary of the League for Friendship between Nations in the GDR .

Life

Schönfeld, the son of a worker, attended elementary school and high school. After graduating from high school, he did military service from 1938 and military service in the Wehrmacht from 1939 . In 1944 he was taken prisoner of war by the Soviets as a sergeant .

In 1945 he returned to Germany in the Soviet occupation zone . He became a member of the KPD and found work as a trainee in the district editorial office of the Saxon People's Newspaper in Freiberg . Schoenfeld was in 1946 a member of the SED and speaker at the city council or the council of the district Freiberg . From 1950 he worked for the Sächsische Zeitung , initially until 1950 as a district editor in Meißen and Dippoldiswalde and from 1950 to 1956 as editor or deputy editor- in- chief in Dresden . From 1956 to 1959 he was editor-in-chief of the GDR-Revue , a magazine of the "Society for Cultural Connections with Abroad". He completed a correspondence course in journalism at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig in 1961 as a qualified journalist.

From 1959 to 1961 he was Deputy Secretary General of the Society for Cultural Connections with Abroad. With the founding of the League for Friendship of Nations on December 15, 1961, he became General Secretary of the League and held this function until 1975. On April 28, 1975, the function of General Secretary was abolished and Horst Brasch was appointed head of the secretariat. Schönfeld became deputy head.

From its founding in 1962, Schönfeld was Vice President of the Franco-German Society and later Vice President of the GDR-Finland Friendship Society.
