Herbert Westerich

Herbert Westerich (* 1904 in Hamburg ; † November 15, 1991 in Hamburg) was a German businessman and from 1969 to 1975 President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce .

Origin, education and profession

Herbert Westerich came from the respected Hamburg merchant family Westerich. In 1835, his grandfather Adolph Westerich bought the widow of the company's founder Heinrich Wilhelm Conrad Schacht, who had died at the age of only 33, his paper production and trading company in Hamburg, and after the Hamburg fire of 1842, the company was renamed Schacht and Westerich in Große Bäckerstraße 18/20 founded. After attending school, Herbert Westerich completed a commercial apprenticeship from 1921 to 1923 and then carried out various activities in other Hamburg trading houses before he and his brother Eduard Westerich started their father's business as owner in 1929 . In 1939, as part of the aryanization policy of the National Socialists , Westerich acquired the office building of the Jewish merchant Iwan Franck on Neuer Wall 39, well below its value. The paper business founded by M. Kimmelstiel & Co. on the ground floor in 1876 was continued as a branch of Schacht & Westerich. Only after the opening of the Hansel-Viertel in 1980 in the Große Bleichen was the main branch moved there and stayed there until the company's bankruptcy in 2015. Westerich died in 1991, after he had already made his son Manfred Westerich a partner.

Honorary positions and awards

Westerich was initially particularly active in the committees of the retail trade association, where he was a member of the presidium of the main community of German retailers and chairman of the retail trade association in Hamburg. As early as 1955 he set up a junior group in the stationery branch (paper, office supplies, stationery). From 1966 to 1981 Westerich was a member of the administrative board of the Deutsche Bundespost . Since 1946 a member of the Presidium of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce , he was President of the Chamber of Commerce from 1969 to 1975 and at the same time Vice President of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 1971 to 1976 . Together with the former mayors Max Brauer , Kurt Sieveking , Paul Nevermann and Herbert Weichmann as well as Peter-Heinz Müller-Link and Jürgen Westphal , he was a co-signer of the appeal for the founding of the association Rettet die Deichstrasse on April 13, 1972 . In 1982 he was co-founder and chairman of the Friends of Monument Preservation Association

Westerich was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 1954 . In 1978 he was the 35th Hamburger to be honored with the Mayor Stolten Medal , the highest honor in the Hanseatic city.
