Herbert Zerna

Herbert Zerna ( Lower Sorbian Herbert Cerna ; born September 9, 1905 in Guhrow ; † October 24, 1955 in Papitz ) was a Lower Sorbian theologian and educator. He became known as a local researcher and director of films related to local history.

Life

Zerna came from a German / Sorbian family. His father Martin Zerna had been a village school teacher in Guhrow since 1902. After attending a high school in Cottbus , he studied in Jena , Tübingen and Halle (Saale) theology . First he was vicar in Burg (Spreewald) at the local parish church . From 1937 to 1945 he was pastor in Jähnsdorf in the Neumark and from 1945 to 1949 took over the pastoral position in Neu Zauche at the local village church Neu Zauche . In 1949 he became a pastor in Papitz .

He worked as a local researcher and published the results of his work in Cottbus newspapers. The main focus of work was Wendish customs and manners as well as the meaning of field names . He directed several short films made by Burg from 1930 onwards, which dealt thematically with life in German / Sorbian villages in the Cottbus region. The youth theater play Meine Heimat , written by him in 1931, was performed in Cottbus and several villages.
