The autumn gold cup ( Sternbergia lutea ) is a plant from the Amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae) that blooms in autumn and occurs in the Mediterranean region. Other common trivial names of the genus Sternbergia are "gold crocuses", "winter daffodils" or "storm flowers".
features
The perennial plant reaches heights of 10 to 30 centimeters. The shape of the leaves is linear and blunt. They are 4 to 15 millimeters wide, with entire margins or indistinctly toothed and appear at the same time as the flowers in September to October.
The flowers are golden yellow in color and resemble crocus . They stand upright on a 4 to 10 centimeter long shaft. The perianth has a short tube and six egg-shaped to elliptical sections that are 3 to 4 inches long and 7 to 15 millimeters wide. At the base of the flower there is a membranous bract . The filaments of the six stamens are much longer than the anthers.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22, less often 33.
Occurrence
The species is widespread in southern Europe , in southwest Asia to Central Asia and North Africa and occurs there in garigues , in rock corridors and on pastureland.
use
The autumn gold cup is also cultivated as an ornamental plant in gardens and can therefore also appear overgrown outside its natural area.
Name declaration
The name Sternbergia honors Kaspar Maria von Sternberg (1761–1838), the Bohemian theologian and natural scientist (botanist), founder of modern palaeobotany.
