Herman George Ouseley, Baron Ouseley (born March 24, 1945 in Guyana ) is a British politician and life peer .

life and career

Ouseley was born in Guyana, the son of a baker and a nurse . His father died when he was seven years old. In 1957, at the age of 11, he came to live with his mother in England . He grew up in a one-room apartment in Brixton , south London .

He attended the William Penn Comprehensive School in Peckham , which he left in 1963 with two A-Levels. Graduated from Catford College with a degree in municipal administration with the aim of becoming an administrative officer . Ouseley then worked as a civil servant in the city and local government at what was then Middlesex County Council. From 1963 to 1970 he worked there as an urban planning officer, from 1970 to 1973 then as a responsible social welfare worker for the elderly. From 1973 to 1979 he was the Community Relations Executive, responsible for community affairs. From 1979 to 1981 he worked as a Race Relations Policy Officer at Lambeth Council . From 1981 to 1984 he was Race Relations Policy Officer at the Greater London Council . There he headed the Department for Ethnic Minorities . From 1984 to 1986 he was Deputy Chief Executive Officer in the London Borough of Lambeth . From 1986 to 1990 he was Director of Education and Chief Executive Officer of the Inner London Education Authority, from 1990 to 1993 he was subsequently Chief Executive Officer for the London Borough of Lambeth.

In 1993 he became Chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE). He held this office until 2000. During his tenure, Ouseley was particularly committed to restoring declining credibility with regard to the work of the Commission for Racial Equality. From 2000 to 2005 he was President of Different Realities Partnership Ltd , an organization specializing in advising on equality , cultural diversity and self- promotion strategies. From 2002 to 2005 he was also President of the Local Government Association. Since 2005, Ouseley has been working as an independent consultant on issues relating to equality.

Ouseley holds numerous other offices in various organizations and associations. He has been chairman ( chairman ) of the Policy Research Institute on Aging and Ethnicity at the Bradford University (since 1986), of Kick It Out , a campaign against racism , discrimination and homophobia in football , (since 1993) and the PRESET Education and Training Trust (since 1997). He is also the chairman of the Caribbean Advisory Group for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office . He has been a trustee of the Manchester United Foundation since 2006 . He is patron of the Presentation Housing Association , a nonprofit housing corporation , (since 1990), the Daneford Trust , a nonprofit organization that cultural exchange programs for black and colored pupils and students , (since 1991) and the National Black Police Association (since 2007) .

In 1981 he published the book The System . He has also written numerous articles and brochures on gender equality issues and local government and local government issues.

Membership in the House of Lords

On 26 June 2001 he was appointed Life peer as Baron Ouseley , of Peckham Rye in the London Borough of Southwark , was appointed. He is a crossbencher in the House of Lords . On March 29, 2010, he supported, together Tessa Blackstone, Baroness Blackstone , the newly appointed Life Peer Michael Bichard, Baron Bichard in his inauguration.

Honors

Ouseley holds numerous honorary doctorates and degrees . He has honorary doctorates from the University of Edinburgh , Sheffield Hallam University , Bradford University, the University of Leicester , Leeds Metropolitan University , the University of Warwick , Oxford Brookes University , the University of Greenwich , London South Bank University , the London Metropolitan University , the University of East London and the University of Brighton . In 1997 he was raised to a Knight Bachelor degree .
