Yermilov was accused of formalism and cosmopolitanism, and in 1949 he was excluded from the Association of Fine Artists, in which he was only re-admitted ten years later. He was forced to earn his living by designing clubhouses and study rooms for party officials as well as teaching. The artist's studio was destroyed by fire and his works are scattered in numerous private collections and museums around the world.
