The Hermann-Billung-Gymnasium is a general education, state high school with 1,050 students (as of August 2016) in Celle . 54% of the students are boys, 46% girls. This school is run by the district of Celle .

history

The Hermann-Billung-Gymnasium is named after the Saxon Duke Hermann Billung . It is originally a descendant of the Latin school founded in 1328 (today Gymnasium Ernestinum ). In 1869 the "Realzweig" of the Ernestinum was officially appointed to the higher middle school, but was not spatially separated until 1877. From then on, lessons took place in a neo-Gothic building on the north wall. The main focus of the lessons was now on the modern language and mathematics and natural sciences and was soon called the Realgymnasium . At the end of the 19th century, however, there was a massive decline in the number of pupils, especially in the upper classes, so that the upper school was temporarily closed. At the end of the First World War, the number of pupils rose again and, as an upper secondary school, followed the modern teaching focus.

Effects of National Socialism

After the NSDAP came to power in 1933, everyday school life changed increasingly, new concepts had to be implemented, and lessons were cut in favor of Hitler Youth campaigns. The school director Ludwig Koehler was transferred to a sentence in 1935 after 19 years as headmaster due to ideological differences with the district administration. During the war years, school operations were severely impaired, the number of pupils declined, teachers were called up for military service and the building was temporarily used as a hospital. In the summer of 1945 there was no school operation.

post war period

The lessons at the Hermann-Billung-Gymnasium took place in this building in the city center until 1971; The Dammaschwiese can be seen in the background

Since Celle hardly suffered from air raids, classes were resumed in October 1945 in the intact school building. The number of pupils increased massively to around 700 in 1949 and 950 in 1955, there was a lack of space and teachers. Nevertheless, attempts were made to focus on the future, the student council was established, and the Hermann-Billung-Gymnasium developed into a culturally and athletically very active school.

Times of reform and upheaval

At the centenary in 1969, the coming years could be looked at with great anticipation. On the one hand, after a long time, we could finally look forward to getting a new school building; on the other hand, a school policy came into force that fundamentally reformed the school system. Due to massive space problems and ailing infrastructure, the school authorities invested a total of 12 million DM in a building complex furnished according to the most modern aspects , which is characterized by its functional character and contemporary furnishings. The facility is located on the edge of the Neustädter Holz forest . Parts of the recreation area extend into this wooded area, which consists mainly of conifers, and are delimited by a large, divisible sports hall with outdoor facilities. After a huge increase in the number of students to over 1,300 in the 1970s, the value averaged 800 students up to the 1990s.

Current school development

The building is divided into a classroom wing and a specialist room wing and offers special rooms for the natural sciences , art , music and IT . The school also has a multimedia-equipped foyer with a stage, which is used for various events. A cafeteria has been integrated into the building since May 2004 . In 2004, eight mobile classrooms were made available on the site. After the school reform in Lower Saxony in the same year, the HBG also had buildings in Winsen available. Both the branch in Winsen and the mobile rooms were replaced by a multi-storey extension to the main building by 2012. In addition to classrooms, the extension also includes a new cafeteria and new physics rooms. Extensive thermal insulation measures for the building were also made using funds from the economic stimulus package . In addition, parts of the school yard were redesigned. The school newspaper "HBG-Mitteilungen", which appears regularly, provides information about events and developments at the school.

Bilingual teaching

On August 2, 1993, bilingual (German-English) lessons in history were started at this school for the first time in the then administrative district of Lüneburg with 31 students and have been successfully maintained to this day or are currently also being carried out in other subjects for individual teaching units. The students can take the bilingual lessons from the 8th grade up to the Abitur.

Scientific branch

At the beginning of the 1999/2000 school year , a branch was set up with a special focus on mathematics and the natural sciences , which enables a more in-depth discussion of the topics by increasing the number of hours in the relevant subjects.

Activities around the school

The school offers a variety of extracurricular activities. They range from numerous sports activities and theater groups to various choirs , orchestras and big bands . Every year students take part in competitions such as Jugend forscht or Jugend trained for the Olympics . For over ten years the school has sent a delegation to THIMUN in The Hague . In addition, a children's home in Peru and various sponsored children in Kenya have been financially supported for many years . For some time now, the Hermann-Billung-Gymnasium has been running a school partnership with the IES Pablo Gargallo in Saragossa as part of its Spanish lessons . As part of the European Union's COMENIUS program , both schools were selected for the joint project “My host's culture and society”.

useful information
