Hermann Dunger

Hermann Dunger (born April 2, 1843 in Plauen , † September 21, 1912 in Dresden ) was a German language purist , Germanist and teacher.

Life

Dunger studied classical philology at the University of Leipzig from 1861 to 1865 . Subsequently he was a teacher at the Thomas School in Leipzig and went to Dresden in 1866. There he worked as a teacher at the Vitzthumschen Gymnasium , and from 1885 he was vice rector and grammar school professor at the Wettiner Gymnasium .

As a result of the appeal sent by Herman Riegel at the end of August 1885 to found the General German Language Association (ADSV), he founded the first ADSV branch association in Dresden on September 10, 1885. Today this is considered the founding date of the ADSV.

Born in the Vogtland region, Dunger collected evidence of Vogtland dialects. He also endeavored to ensure a high quality of public language use and achieved merits as a promoter of the German written language. Dunger died in Dresden in 1912 and was buried in the Old Annenfriedhof .

Awards and honors

Dunger was knight 1st class of the Saxon Order of Civil Merit , knight 1st class of the Albrecht Order and knight of the House Order of the Wendish Crown .

Dungerstrasse in the Kaditz district of Dresden was named after Hermann Dunger in 1935.
