After the KPD was banned by the Federal Constitutional Court , he continued his work for the KPD and became a candidate for the Politburo and, from 1962, a full member of the Politburo.
Gautier ran for the citizenship election in Bremen in 1959 with the Voters' Association against Nuclear Armament for Peace and Understanding (WgaA), which failed because of the 5% hurdle. He also participated in the establishment of the DFU at the federal level. From July 1961 to May 1962 he was in custody and in 1966 was sentenced by the Federal Court of Justice to eight months in prison. In 1968 he was one of the founders of the DKP at federal level and was its deputy party chairman from 1973. In his last decades he was active for the Social Association Germany and in the senior working group of the United Service Union (Ver.di).
He was married to Hanna Gautier. His son Dieter Gautier (born June 23, 1946) was deputy federal chairman of the SDAJ for a long time and head of the DKP district of Bremen / Lower Saxony-Northwest in the late 1980s.
