Hermann Gemmel

Hermann Gemmel (born November 28, 1813 in Barten , East Prussia ; † March 22, 1868 in Königsberg , East Prussia; full name: Hermann Johann Ernst Gemmel ) was a German architect , painter and university professor .

Life

Hermann Gemmel attended school in Königsberg and then completed an apprenticeship as a surveyor . At the age of 23 he went to the Berlin Building Academy as a student . In addition to artistic drawing lessons from the painter Hans Hertig , he studied with Karl Eduard Biermann , Franz Krüger and Friedrich Wilhelm Schirmer .

In 1845 Gemmel made his debut at an exhibition at the Berlin Art Academy with his painting Dyeing at Schafgraben . In addition, he was asked to submit drafts for the Berlin Cathedral , which were ultimately not considered. In 1845 he returned to his homeland and settled in Königsberg.

Gemmel traveled to Italy in 1850 and again from spring 1854 to autumn 1855, staying for a few weeks in Rome and Venice . In the lagoon city he was involved in the design of a chapel for Cardinal Zeno . After his return home, Gemmel was entrusted in the same year with a teaching position for architecture, art history and perspective at the Königsberg Art Academy and appointed full professor .

Hermann Gemmel died on March 22, 1868 in Königsberg at the age of 54.

In all of his artistic work, Gemmel thematized the architecture of Italy and East Prussia. His pictures are still worth seeing today, just because of the architecture shown.
