Hermann Härtel (musician)

Hermann Härtel (* 1949 in Irdning in Styria ) is an Austrian musician , lecturer at music universities, author and folk music researcher .

Life

Hermann Härtel first learned the profession of businessman and sewing machine mechanic. Since his youth he was active in youth and youth music work and later turned his hobby into a profession. From 1981 he worked in the state youth department at the office of the Styrian state government . He was successfully involved in the reopening of the Styrian Folk Song Archive (1986) and from then on dealt with folk song research and issues of event culture .

Hermann Härtel is a member of the "Schweizerorchester Frohnleiten" and the "Citoller Tanzgeiger" (violin, trombone, vocals). He has been imparting his experience as a dance musician, singer and field researcher since 1976 in courses focusing on "dance music with strings", "singing to the violin", "yodelling" and "connection between dance and music". In his lectures and journalistic work, the focus is on the subjects of "Tradition as a socio-political concern", "Folklore studies" and "Promotion of music as food". Härtel also wrote pointed columns on traditions, customs and everyday culture.

In 1981 he took over the management of the Steirisches Volksliedwerk in Graz , where he founded several initiatives; to make the various varieties of folk music more attractive in the present day. These include the office for Christmas carols , the “musician-friendly restaurant” and the “Styrian Geigentag”.

In 2000 he was given the professional title of "Professor" by the Austrian Federal President due to his cultural initiatives and his journalistic activities .

Härtel's initiative for yodelling led to a renaissance of this vocal form in Austria and secured him participation in the Taichi Traditional Music Award in Beijing in 2012.
Also in 2012, Härtel was also awarded the Austrian Folk Music Prize Tobi Reiser Prize .

Hermann Härtel was a lecturer at the Art University Graz from 1989 to 2012 , from 1992 to 2012 at the Music University Vienna (folk music ensemble and vocal practice) and from 2009 to 2012 at the Mozarteum in Salzburg .
