Hermann August Theodor Harms

Hermann August Theodor Harms (born July 16, 1870 in Berlin ; † November 27, 1942 there ) was a German botanist and taxonomist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Harms ".

Live and act

Harms was a botanist at the Botanical Museum in Berlin . He was a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . Harms was also the long-time editor of Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler for his Das Pflanzenreich , which appeared in 107 issues from 1900 to 1953 . For the work The Natural Plant Families by Engler and Carl Prantl , he wrote the chapters on several plant families, including the Bromeliaceae (1930). In 1907 Harms was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Harms is the author of important works on the plant genus Nepenthes . In 1938 he revised this genus and created its three subgenera Anurosperma , Eunepenthes and Mesonepenthes . He was also interested in the genus Passiflora .

Hermann August Theodor Harms died in Berlin in 1942 at the age of 72 and was buried in the Old Twelve Apostles Cemetery in Berlin-Schöneberg . The grave has not been preserved.

Dedication names

The plant genus Harmsia K.Schum. from the family of mallow (Malvaceae), Harmsiella Briq. of the family Labiatae (Lamiaceae), Harmsiodoxa O.E.Schulz from the family Cruciferae (Brassicaceae), Harmsiopanax Warbende. from the family of the Araliaceae and Neoharmsia R.Vig. from the legume family (Fabaceae) has been named after him.
