Hermann Vinzenz Heller (born August 22, 1866 in Vienna - Hietzing ; † June 8, 1949 in Schleppenhof near Klagenfurt ) was an Austrian painter , sculptor and doctor as well as teacher at the kk Kunstgewerbeschule ( University of Applied Arts Vienna ) of the kk Austrian Museum for Art and Industry ( Museum of Applied Arts ), at the Technical University in Vienna ( Technical University Vienna ) and at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts .

Life

Hermann Heller was born in Hietzing as the son of the lawyer Joseph V. Heller and received private drawing lessons at an early age. After graduating from the humanistic Mariahilfer Gymnasium in 1888, he began studying painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, as well as studying medicine at the University of Vienna . In 1895 he successfully completed both studies. Then he worked as a corvette doctor. In 1900 a research grant took him to Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, London, Bern and Basel. In 1903, Heller qualified as a professor at the Technical University in Vienna for the "theory of the construction of the human figure" and continued studying sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts. After completing his third degree, he worked as a teacher at the three universities in Vienna (see above) from 1906 to 1918, sometimes with interruptions from trips or assignments as a naval doctor. In 1913 he married his student Vilma Grömmer. In 1913/19 he published the proportion tables of the human figure (Verlag Anton Schroll, Vienna). In 1928 Heller was appointed full professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In 1932 he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. In 1935 he was awarded the title of full professor by the Technical University.

Heller's work includes more than 500 oil paintings, portrait, landscape and nude drawings, portrait busts, bronzes and graphics. Works can be found in Viennese museums ( Kunsthistorisches Museum , Albertina , Museum of Applied Arts , Vienna Museum , art collection of the University of Applied Arts) as well as in museums in the federal states, abroad and in private collections.
