Hermann Hildebrand (historian)

Hermann Christian Hildebrand ( Russian Герман Кристиан Гильдебранд * June 26 . Jul / 8. July  1843 greg. In Goldingen , † January 17 jul. / 29. January  1890 greg. In Riga ) was a Baltic German historian and archivist .

Life

family

Hermann was a son of the district school inspector from Göttingen, Justus Hildebrand and Luise, nee. Wesselmann. He married Rosa von Baehr (1855–1934) in 1885 . The psychiatrist Hermann Konstantin Hildebrand (1871–1928) was the son of this marriage.

Career

Hildebrand received private tuition and attended the district school in Goldingen, and from 1858 to 1861 the government high school in Mitau . From 1862 to 1865 he studied history in Göttingen . He received his doctorate as Dr. phil. with Georg Waitz , but continued his studies in Berlin in 1865 . From 1866 he was in Dorpat , where he took his senior teacher exam and was master's degree from 1867 . Hildebrand received a research assignment from the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg for archival research in Riga and Reval . In 1868 he was assistant to the director of the Reich Archives, Prince Obolenski, then tutor in Paris for a year . For three months he was editor of the Revaler Zeitung and in 1871 curator at the library of the Academy of Sciences. Hildebrand went on archive trips to Sweden , Denmark and Germany , St. Petersburg and Moscow . Since 1882 he was the city archivist in Riga, where he was recruited by Georg Berkholz to be the first Baltic historian. In 1873 he was also a corresponding member and in 1888 honorary member of the Society for History and Archeology of the Baltic Sea Provinces of Russia , and also since 1888 honorary member of the Estonian learned society in Dorpat.
