Hermann IV (Hessen-Rotenburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann von Hessen-Rotenburg (born August 15, 1607 in Kassel ; † March 25, 1658 in Rotenburg an der Fulda ) was Landgrave of the partially independent Landgraviate of Hessen-Rotenburg . He was the fourth son of Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel and his second wife Juliane von Nassau-Dillenburg .

Life

From 1618 Werner Geise was the prince's tutor . With the establishment of the Rotenburger Quart in 1627, Landgrave Hermann in Rotenburg took over the regency.

Because of a crippled foot, Hermann had to wear an iron support leg for life. His strengths therefore developed not in the military, but in the scientific field. He was a recognized researcher of his time in the fields of meteorology, mathematics, astronomy and geography. His Incidental Cosmographic Description of the Lower Duchy of Hesse from 1641 is one of the Hessian standard works of regional studies. The Rotenburg School, which was destroyed in the war year 1637, was rebuilt in 1651 at his own expense in Löbergasse 2, as the inscription on the house shows.

After gaining further territories in 1648, the Hermanns brothers, who had meanwhile grown up, were also appointed as ruling princes in parts of the Quart according to the law of inheritance distribution. Friedrich got Eschwege , and Ernst got Rheinfels . In 1655 Hessen-Eschwege fell to Ernst after the death of the heirless Friedrich, and in 1658 Ernst inherited the Rotenburg part after the death of his childless brother Hermann.

Under the company name Der Fütternde , Hermann was accepted as a member of the literary fruitful society .

Marriage and offspring

Hermann married on January 10, 1634 in Waldeck Sophie Juliane von Waldeck -Wildungen (1607–1637)., Daughter of Count  Christian von Waldeck-Wildungen and Elisabeth von Nassau-Siegen. From this marriage the children sprang:

  1. stillborn son (* / † December 1, 1634)
  2. Juliane von Hessen-Rotenburg (* March 25, 1636 - † May 22, 1636)

After the death of Sophie Juliane, he married Kunigunde Juliane von Anhalt-Dessau (1608–1683), daughter of Prince Johann Georg I of Anhalt-Dessau, on January 2, 1642 in Weimar . The marriage remained childless.

Hermann and Kunigunde are buried in the Rotenburg collegiate church.
