Hermann Kahlenbach

Hermann Kahlenbach (born October 25, 1929 in Immekeppel , near Bergisch Gladbach , † May 22, 2002 in Saarbrücken ) was a well-known German composer and arranger.

Kahlenbach studied piano and trombone at the Cologne University of Music . He found his first job in 1957 in the orchestra of the Landestheater Detmold as a solo trombonist, from where he moved to the Saarland Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1962 . His numerous compositions and excellent arrangements - mostly modern entertainment literature for wind orchestra - made his name widely known and brought him many commissions for compositions and arrangements, among others. a. for the wind band of the Berlin Philharmonic , for the Rhineland-Palatinate musicians and for large entertainment orchestras .

From 1977 onwards, as a conductor, he shaped the Saarbrücken Stadtkapelle into one of the most powerful wind orchestras in the region. In October 1999, Hermann Kahlenbach celebrated his 70th birthday and resigned from conducting after 22 years. After that he remained loyal to the Saarbrücken city band as a trombonist.

In 1987 the Saarland state government awarded him the title of “ chamber musician ”.

In 1989 he founded the St. Ingbert Jazz Orchestra Hermanns Bigband , of which he was the band leader until his death.

In 1995 he founded the "Hermann Kahlenbach Ensemble" together with Fred Schmeer from Bischmisheim. An ensemble which interprets sound film hits of the 20s, 30s and 40s in the style of the "Comedian Harmonists". He wrote many arrangements for the ten-man choir of which he was director until his death. Today the ensemble is led by choral music director Walter Niederländer.

In 1998 he was awarded the Saarland Order of Merit.
