Hermann Karsten (mineralogist)

Hermann Karsten (born September 3, 1809 in Breslau ; † August 26, 1877 in Reinerz , Lower Silesia ) was a German mathematician and mineralogist.

Life

Hermann Karsten (No. 7-2-1 of the gender census that began with his great-grandfather ) was born as the son of the mineralogist Carl Karsten . At the age of 16 he began to study law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität at Easter 1826 . In the same year he was reciprocated in the Corps Borussia Bonn . In the summer semester of 1827 he continued his studies at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin and the Albertus-Universität Königsberg . He switched to mathematics and science . In 1829, at the age of 20, he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. After studying astronomy at the Königsberg observatory , he completed his habilitation a year later at the University of Rostock for mathematics and mineralogy . In 1831 he was appointed associate professor and in 1836 full professor of mathematics. In 1844, 1845, 1848 and 1873 he was elected Rector of the University of Rostock. From 1830 to 1850 he published the Mecklenburg calendar and the small astronomical almanac for seafarers calculated by him. In 1854 he was appointed director of the Rostock Navigation School. In 1874 he was elected chairman of the German Nautical Association and the navigation testing authority. He was a committee member of the Association for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People and Chairman of the Mecklenburg Singers Association and the Mecklenburg Art Association. Karsten was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 1874.

Hermann Karsten was with Theodore, geb. Berg (1817–1863) married, daughter of Pastor Christian Berg (1767–1840) from Wustrow (Fischland) . Between 1837 and 1851, three daughters and four sons were born in the marriage.
