Hermann Lebert

Hermann Lebert - actually Hermann Lewy - (born June 9, 1813 in Breslau ; † August 1, 1878 in Bex , Canton of Vaud) was a Silesian-Prussian , German doctor and pathologist . In 1841 he became a Swiss citizen in Bex, Canton of Vaud.

Life

Lebert studied medicine and natural sciences in Berlin from 1831 to 1834 and later in Zurich a . a. with Karl Asmund Rudolphi , Johann Lukas Schönlein , from whom he received his doctorate in 1834 with a thesis on the gentian, and Lorenz Oken , then continued his studies in Paris until 1836 and returned to Switzerland in 1836 to work as a spa doctor and clinician since 1836 to be practically active. In addition, he continued his academic work in Paris (1842–1845), mostly in the winter months, where he moved entirely in 1846, where he also had an extensive practice. He then taught as a professor of clinical medicine in Zurich (1853–1859) and in Breslau (1859–1874). When he gave up his clinical and teaching activities in 1874, he returned to Bex, where he died in 1878. In 1870 he became a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences in Paris.

He was one of the first to use microscopes in pathology and, in 1848, called for them to be used in living people to diagnose cancer.
