Hermann Plathner (painter)

Hermann August Plathner (born August 23, 1831 in Gronau (Leine) , † March 11, 1902 in Düsseldorf ) was a German genre painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Plathner, a son of Hermann August Plathner (1793-1853) and his wife Sophie, widowed Plock, née Schmidt († 1862), first learned agriculture ("economy") in Sorsum near Hildesheim . After the Polytechnic School in Hanover , he attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1854 . Then he was a student of Adolph Tidemand and Rudolf Jordan . On November 20, 1857, he married Gertrud Weyrather, who gave birth to two daughters and two sons between 1858 and 1864. Since 1862 he had his own studio in Düsseldorf. He went on study trips to northern Germany and the Black Forest . Contemporary critics praised the “good characteristics” and “fine mood” of his genre pictures, whose folk motifs show a closeness to the painting of Benjamin Vautier .

Plathner was a member of the artists' association Malkasten and the Allgemeine Deutsche Kunstgenossenschaft . In 1889 his address was at Rosenstrasse 34 in Düsseldorf- Pempelfort .
