Hermann Ravensberger , contemporary also Ravensperger (born September 30, 1586 in Siegen , † December 20, 1625 in Groningen ) was a German Reformed theologian . He was a professor at the Dutch University of Groningen and rector of that university.

Life

Hermann Ravensberger first studied law from 1603 and reformed theology from 1604 at the High School in Herborn . During his studies, he made friends with Jacob Schickhart in 1603 , met his sister Magdalena and married her on October 22nd, 1610. In 1609 he defended his doctoral thesis with the disputation Controversiae de impulsiva praedestinationis causa and in 1610 received his doctorate in theology. After completing his studies, he became a professor of education, first in Herborn and later in Steinfurt .

In 1614 Ravensberger was appointed professor of theology at the newly founded University of Groningen, where he went with his wife and brother-in-law Jacob Schickhardt. Later he was also elected rector there. Ravensberger played a key role in the academic development of the University of Groningen and in defining the study program.

Hermann Ravensberger died shortly after his wife at the young age of 39. He left five young children. In January 1626 his brother-in-law Martin Schickhard came to Groningen to take care of its affairs.

In 1663 the Roman Catholic Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith put Ravensberger's work Via veritatis er pacis ... on the index .
