Life

Career and private life

Hermann Schierig graduated from school with a secondary school leaving certificate . Finally, he completed an administrative career at the Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse in Magdeburg, which he completed with two administrative exams. In the time of National Socialism he did labor service from 1940, after which he was drafted into the Navy . In 1945 he became a prisoner of war, from which he was released in February 1946. He returned to Magdeburg, his mother's place of residence, and between March 1946 and December 1947 found work in the Wolmirstedter social security fund. In February 1948 he fled for political and personal reasons to the Federal Republic of Germany , where he lived in Emden . There he became an employee of the Emden Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse.

He was married and had two children. Schierig died on March 26, 1999 in the Emden suburb of Ihlow ( Aurich district ), where he had settled.

Lord Mayor

In Emden, Schierig was active as a council member from 1956, from 1961 as a senator and from 1964, finally, mayor , succeeding Hans Susemihl , whose replacement was accompanied by disputes. Susemihl had actually announced that he wanted to retire from the honorary office of the mayor, but then changed his mind. The Emden social democrats prevented this, however. When Susemihl gave a lengthy interview shortly before the election of the daily Ostfriesen-Zeitung , the Social Democrats issued an injunction prohibiting publication. Until the election, the public did not learn anything about Susemihl's point of view. In the election, the SPD and its new OB candidate Schierig finally emerged as the winner.

The Volkswagen plant in Emden opened during Schierig's tenure as Mayor of Emden , even if the preparatory work had already been carried out under his predecessor Hans Susemihl. In addition, the city's cultural and sports infrastructure was further expanded: the North Sea Hall (built in 1972) and the New Theater (also in 1972) were built. The new Emden Hauptbahnhof was inaugurated in 1973, in Schierig's last year in office. Emden has also been the location of a technical college since 1973 .

As Lord Mayor, Schierig had to resign due to a scandal. After the city of Emden had signed a contract with the American energy company Phillips Petroleum Company to set up a natural gas landing station on the Knock for gas from the North Sea field Ekofisk , this event was extensively celebrated in an Emden “ establishment ”. Schierig, Emden's senior city director Enno Lenwerder and a small number of managers from the energy company left a bill for 4,500 D-Marks to be borne by the city treasury. Officially, however, there were 30 people on the billing list who should have attended the celebration. Schierig, who had already been viewed critically by some party comrades for a long time due to his abundance of power, was then urged to resign. This process dragged on for about three months: the celebration took place on June 17, 1973, and the resignation took place on September 12. At the same time, Oberstadtdirektor Lenwerder applied to the regional president in Aurich for disciplinary proceedings against himself, as a result of which he also had to vacate his office. The natural gas landing station was opened in 1977.

The SPD majority faction in the Emden city council elected Jan Klinkenborg as Schierig's successor .

Member of the state parliament

Schiering was a member of the NDR Broadcasting Council. From May 6, 1959 to June 20, 1970 he was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament (4th to 6th electoral period). From June 12, 1963 to June 20, 1970 he was secretary of the Lower Saxony state parliament. He was Chairman of the Committees on Ports and Fisheries (January 18, 1966 to June 5, 1967) and Ports and Shipping (July 6, 1967 to June 20, 1970).
