Hermann Hugo Rudolf Schwartze (born September 7, 1837 in Neuhof near Penkun , Pomerania ; † August 20, 1910 at Tannefeld Castle near Ronneburg) was a doctor and the first German professor of ear medicine at the University Ear Clinic in Halle .

Life

Hermann Schwartze was born on September 7, 1837 at Gut Neuhof near Penkun in Pomerania as the son of the landowner Johann Wilhelm Schwartze . At the University of Würzburg he studied with Anton Friedrich Freiherr von Tröltsch and at the Humboldt University in Berlin with August Lucae . At the Humboldt University in Berlin, he received his doctorate in medicine in 1859 , thus completing his studies. He then worked as a military doctor, then as an assistant doctor at the University of Würzburg. In 1863 he completed his habilitation in otology at theUniversity of Halle . After he had opened his own ear clinic, the university appointed him extraordinary professor for otology in 1868 , making him the first German professor in this field. During the campaign against France ( Franco-German War ) he worked as a doctor in the field hospital of the fourth army, for which he received the Iron Cross second class . Promoted to paid associate professor in 1873, he became a full honorary professor in 1896, and finally a full professor at the University of Halle in 1903 . Overall, he had worked as a general practitioner several times.

Schwartze later fell ill with a nervous disease that was incurable, which is why he gave up the professorship and went to a sanatorium . He finally died on August 20, 1910. He was succeeded by Alfred Denker . Schwartze's grave is on Halle's Stadtgottesacker .

Services

Along with Adam Politzer and Anton von Tröltsch, Schwartze is one of the founders of scientific ear medicine, he promoted the pathological anatomy of the auditory organ and the surgical treatment of ear diseases. During operations, he pierced the eardrum, which other surgeons avoided. He is one of the pioneers in ear surgery and, through the development of a new technique of antrotomy and mastoidectomy as well as radical surgery of the middle ear for purulent mastoiditis and chronic otitis, makes the University of Halle into a center for ear surgery .

Because of his merits he was accepted into several scientific societies, so he was an honorary member of the American otological society . In 1907 a commemorative publication was made in his honor, and he had also received the Third Class Red Eagle Order and the Prussian Second Class Crown Order from Prussia . In addition, the University of Halle donated the Hermann Schwartze Medal. In 1886 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
