Hermann Velstein (* probably 1555 or 1565 in Bösingfeld ; † March 20, 1635 in Oldenburg ) was a German consistorial councilor and school rector in the county of Oldenburg .

Life

Nothing is known about Velstein's youth and education and his date of birth has not been set either.

It is certain that he was the son of the pastor Henricus Velstenius († around 1598) and attended the grammar school in Lemgo. In October 1583 he was matriculated at the University of Helmstedt , which he left after a year. On the recommendation of the Lutheran theologian and historian Hermann Hamelmann , who was an uncle of Velstein and at that time was superintendent of the County of Oldenburg, Velstein was appointed rector of the Latin school founded by Count Johann in 1573 . There he proved to be a talented teacher and initiated a rapid boom at the school.

Distinguished by his achievements, Count Johann VII appointed Velstein as private tutor ( preceptor ) of his children in 1590 , so that Velstein also took over the education of the young Count Anton Günther as his father's successor until 1601 . Anton Günther later thanked his teacher as a present of a house in Oldenburg and extensive property near Blexen .

On March 27, 1608 Velstein was appointed consistorial councilor and voting member of the consistory of the county of Oldenburg, the supreme state authority for church, school and poor affairs in the county. This was the first time that a specialist pedagogue was a member of this committee. On Velsteins proposal in 1609 founded Anton Günther a school fund , which secured the existence of the Latin school financially in the long term and its management Velstein took were.

Velstein is probably also the actual author or at least a key contributor to the Hamelmann school regulations , which he put into effect in 1614 together with the Oldenburg superintendent Gottfried Schlueter .

family

Velstein was married twice. His first wife Margarethe geb. Schröder, the daughter of the Mayor of Oldenburg Johann Schröder , died in childbed . In 1593 Velstein married the maid of honor Maria Engel Nölcke from Nienburg (around 1560 - November 13, 1646).

Velstein had several children, of whom the son Anton Günther became the Oldenburg Privy Councilor , the daughter Elisabeth married the count Johannes Tiling (* 1581) and the daughter Anna married the clerk Ernst Böschen (1575-1636).
