Hermann Walther von Kolberg
Hermann Walther von Kolberg ( bl. 1305 to 1341 in Lübeck ) was a German carver and glass painter.
life and work
Walther was a sculptor and painter with a large workshop who also painted glass windows. “Von Kolberg” is its original name . He worked temporarily with the foundryman Hans Apengeter . He had two sons who were also artistically effective, Hermann was a sculptor and goldsmith and Walther was a painter.
Around 1310/1320, a three-winged altar shrine with five eyelashes was erected on the high altar of the church of the Cismar monastery , some of which were probably made around 1250. The altar is initially attributed to the same workshop as the Bocholt stalls in Lübeck Cathedral , named after the Lübeck bishop Heinrich II Bochholt . It is the oldest carved altar known in art history . Art history has identified this workshop as probably that of Hermann Walther von Kolberg.
Furthermore, the gilded sculpture of a lioness in Lübeck Cathedral is attributed to him or his workshop . The lion belonging to her burned to death in the air raid on Lübeck in 1942.
Hermann Walther von Kolberg is documented for a while as the owner of four houses in Lübeck.
