Svätoplukovo (until 1948 Slovak "Šalgov"; Hungarian Salgó ) is a municipality in the west of Slovakia with a population of 1,342 (December 31, 2019), which for Nitra District , part of the Nitriansky kraj belongs.

The municipality is located in the south of the Nitrianska pahorkatina (part of the Danube Hills ) at the confluence of the Cabajský potok and Mlynský potok rivers . The center of the village is at an altitude of 145  m nm and is 12 kilometers from Nitra .

history

The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1386 as Salgow and belonged to the estate of the Gýmeš Castle (near Jelenec ). In 1787 there were 65 houses and 478 inhabitants, in 1828 105 houses and 759 inhabitants.

Until 1918, the place in Neutra County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

In 1948 the name was changed to Svätoplukovo (after the Moravian prince Svatopluk I ) for national political reasons . From 1976 to 1990 the village was part of the neighboring municipality Mojmírovce .

population

According to the 2011 census, there were 1,310 inhabitants in the village, of which 1,202 were Slovaks, 6 were Czechs and others, 99 inhabitants have no ethnicity. 923 residents confessed to the Roman Catholic Church and 135 residents to the Evangelical Church AB. Other denominations each had fewer than five believers. 93 inhabitants were without religious denomination and the denomination of 144 inhabitants has not been determined.
