Žirany (Hungarian Zsére ) is a Slovak municipality in Okres Nitra and Nitriansky kraj with 1351 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
geography
The municipality is located in the north-western part of the Žitavská pahorkatina hills by the Hunták brook , below the Tribetz Mountains . The center of the village is at an altitude of 250 m nm and is 12 kilometers from Nitra .
Neighboring municipalities are Jelenec in the north and east, Kolíňany in the south-east, Štitáre in the south, Podhorany in the west and Bádice in the north-west.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in the Zobor documents in 1113 as Sire and belonged to the monastery at Zobor . In 1349, according to the documents, it was devastated and soon afterwards it was repopulated. From 1360 to 1848 the village was subject to the Diocese of Neutra . There was a winemaking tradition and the wine was even delivered to the Graner Chapter. Lime kilns have been around since the 15th century, and there were 16 kilns in the 18th century. 15th century In 1828 there were 112 houses and 781 inhabitants who were employed in agriculture and lime kilns.
Until 1918, the place in Neutra County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.
Residents
According to the 2011 census, Žirany had 1,355 inhabitants, including 669 Slovaks, 636 Magyars, seven Czechs and two Poles. 41 residents did not provide any information. 1198 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, six residents to the Greek Catholic Church, five residents to the Evangelical Church AB and two residents to the Reformed Church; ten residents were of other denominations. 48 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 86 residents has not been determined.
