Jelenec (up to 1948 Slovak "Gýmeš"; Hungarian Ghymes or Gímes ) is a municipality in western Slovakia with 2116 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). Administratively, it belongs to Okres Nitra , which in turn belongs to the Nitriansky kraj district.
geography
The municipality is located in the Danube hill country , part of the Slovak Danube lowlands on the Jelenský creek , at the foot of the Tribeč Mountains . The "local mountain" is the Dúň ( 514 m nm ) about four kilometers north of the place where the ruins of the Gýmeš castle are . The mountains are also often used for recreational purposes. Jelenec is 14 kilometers from Nitra and 15 kilometers from Zlaté Moravce and is off the main road 65 .
history
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1113 in the Zobor documents as a gimes . In the 13th century the Hunt-Poznan family got the village from King Andreas II. In 1253 the castle was built and given to the newly founded Forgách family, who owned the village more or less until the beginning of the 20th century. In 1576 and 1663, the place was affected by the Turks, as well as by Bethlen's insurgent army in 1618.
The most likely theory of the origin of the name claims that the name has its origin in the Hungarian word gím ('deer'). The Slovak name Gýmeš was changed to Jelenec in 1948, so that the current place name means something like "deer village".
