Štitáre (Slovak to 1979 "Dolné Štitáre" - until 1948 "Dolné Stitary" - to 1927 "Čitáry"; Hungarian Alsócsitár - until 1907 Csitár ) is a municipality and a town in the west of Slovakia with a population of 1,003 (December 31, 2019) . It is located in Okres Nitra , a district of the superordinate administrative unit Nitriansky kraj .
geography
Štitáre is located in the Danube hill country on the Kadaň brook , a left tributary of Nitra , at the foot of the Tribeč mountains under the Žibrica mountain ( 617 m nm ), eight kilometers northeast of Nitra .
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1113 as Scitar .
Between 1975 and 2002 it was a part of Nitra. The community was and is predominantly agricultural.
