Hermann von Borries

Hermann von Borries (born October 13, 1899 in Sülzhayn , † February 16, 1943 in Porchow , Soviet Union ) was a German officer who became known as the commander of the troops escaping from the Demyansk pocket ( company Fallreep ) during the Second World War .

Lieutenant Colonel Borries commanded the infantry regiment 46, which met the relief troops of Lieutenant General Walther von Seydlitz-Kurzbach at Ramuschewo on the River Lowat . He succeeded in opening a connecting corridor several kilometers long and around four kilometers wide into the Demjansk Basin in his sector . In this corridor was a Knüppeldamm as a road link through a forest sump applied. For his success in opening the Demyansk pocket, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on May 3, 1942 .

Borries died on February 16, 1943 in a field hospital in Porchow, Russia as a result of a serious wound. Posthumously he was promoted to colonel .

He was married to Anna-Marie König, the daughter of the Landesbank director Gustav König from Ratzeburg. With her he had a son, Burghard.
