Hernan Duque de Estrada

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hernan Duque de Estrada (* around 1475 in Talavera de la Reina ; † 1551 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife ) was ambassador for the Catholic Kings Isabellas I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon to Henry VII of England from 1499 and 1502 to 1504 . He was also the ambassador of the Catholic Monarchs in France and Germany.

Life

Hernan Duque de Estrada married Elvira de Meneses. Her daughters María, Isabel and Ana Duque († 1580) entered a Dominican convent in 1513 with a trousseau of 4,000 maravedíes each year . Hernan Duque de Estrada was a knight of the Santiagoorden .

He was "maestresala" with John of Aragón and Castile. Later he was "corregidor" of Córdoba until 1513. With Joanna of Castile he was after the death of Ferdinand II (1516) until his replacement by Charles V (1518) "gobernador y administrador".

In dynastic circles, the sacrament of marriage served not only to seal state contracts but also to sanction economic marriage contracts through canon law . On November 14, 1501, Catherine of Aragón married Arthur Tudor and was widowed on April 2, 1502. Her father Ferdinand II of Aragón called his ambassador, Pedro de Ayala , who was involved in negotiating the marriage contract, back and sent his cupbearer and canon , Hernan Duque de Estrada, to contest the marriage contract. Katharina was to return to Spain immediately and the first installment of the dowry that had already been paid should be repaid.

From 1550 to 1551, Hernan Duque de Estrada was governor of the Canary Islands .
