Herrad von Landsberg

Herrad von Landsberg (also Herrad von Hohenburg , Herradis Landsbergensis ; * between 1125 and 1130 ; † July 25, 1195 on Mount St. Odile in Alsace ) was an abbess and writer of the High Middle Ages .

She was trained as a nun by Abbess Richlint, who was sent to Odilienberg by Frederick I from the Bergen monastery near Neuburg . As Richlint's successor, Herrad was abbess of the Hohenburg monastery on the Odilienberg from 1167 to 1195 and achieved great fame as the author and illustrator of the Hortus Deliciarum ("Garden of Delicacies") , which was created around 1180 .

The Hortus Deliciarum , which summarized the spiritual and profane knowledge of the High Middle Ages for the nuns of the Hohenburg monastery in Latin , was the first verifiably written encyclopedia by a woman .
