Stadl (noble family)

Stadl (also Stadler and Stadel ) was the name of an ancient noble family from Styria , which also belonged to the rural nobility in Lower Austria . The lords of Stadl from the Kornberg line were raised to barons , and a side branch to imperial counts from and to Stadel-Kornberg . The male line of the family died out at the end of the 19th century.

history

origin

The Stadl family was first mentioned in 1180 with Hugo von Stadl . His lineages belonged to the knighthood , as well as ministerials of the Lords of Wildon and the Lords of Stubenberg .

The barn built before 1265 their ancestral castle barn , later Castle Stadl an der Raab in the district barn the municipality Mitterndorf an der Raab in Eastern Styria , and were otherwise well off in Styria.

Stadl to Kornberg

The knights of Stadl attained great wealth and reputation in 1539 through the marriage of Christoph von Stadl to Anna von Graben , the heir to the Lords of Graben zu Kornberg. Subsequently, Emperor Maximilian granted the Stadler the unification of their coat of arms with that of the Lords of Graben (the funerary with the upright spade).

The legacy of the Lords of Graben encompassed numerous and widely scattered manors, estates and castles. This included the important rule Kornberg near Riegersburg with Kornberg Castle (1564-1825), as well as the great rule Marburg including office and castle Marburg as well as Castle Obermarburg (Marburg an der Drau / Maribor , historical partly Marchburg ; 1564 to approx. 1620 ). In 1620 the Stadl Marburg and Obermarburg sold to the Counts Zwickl called Khiesl , and in 1825 Kornberg to the Princes of Liechtenstein .

The Stadl family had their political heyday in the 16th and 17th centuries, when they provided some military, politicians and governors of Styria. Subsequently, family members often appeared as commander and knight of the Teutonic Order and the Order of St. John . In 1708, under the name von und zu Stadel-Kornberg, a branch of the family was raised to the rank of imperial count .

The Stadl family died out in 1882 through their baronial branch in the male line.

Blazon : The Stadler family coat of arms shows three red-clad arms in a black shield (with closed hands, there are also variants with open hands), a white shirt (or envelope) and four (seven) golden bells or buttons on the side; the crest consists of two angled arms that hold up three ostrich feathers (two black, one white), the helmet covers are red and black.

The Stadl's motto was "Amicis amicus, caeteris autem ficus."
