Hersh Shefrin

Hersh M. Shefrin (* 1948 in Winnipeg , Canada ) is a Canadian economist ( finance ) and university professor . He was best known for his work in the field of behavioral financial market theory ( English behavioral finance ). He has the Mario L. Belotti - Chair at the Leavey School of Business of the US Santa Clara University held.

His book Beyond Greed and Fear (2000), translated into several languages and considered the first comprehensive treatise on behavioral finance written specifically for practitioners (e.g. portfolio managers, analysts and financial advisors) , is used worldwide as a textbook for courses in this branch of economics.

  • 2000: William F. Sharpe Award for Scholarship in Financial Research , together with Meir Statman for the publication of Behavioral Portfolio Theory in the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis
  • 2001: He was named one of the financial industry stars in the January issue of CFO Magazine .
  • 2002: Best Paper Award from the Korean Securities Association, with Kee H. Chung and Hoje Jo
  • 2003: Shefrin was listed in The American Economic Review as one of the top 15 economic theorists to influence empirical work.
  • 2006: Award of an honorary doctorate by the University of Oulu , Finland (Ph.D. Honoris causa )
  • 2008: The US Investment Management Consultants Association (IMCA) presented Shefrin with the IMCA Journalism Award for his article How the Disposition Effect and Momentum Impact Investment Professionals (2007) , published in the Journal of Investment Consulting .
  • 2009: His book Beyond Greed and Fear (2000) was recognized by the US bank JPMorgan Chase as one of the ten best books published since 2000.
  • 2014: In February 2014, his work was featured on BBC Television .
