history

prehistory

The area of today's Oberhausen old town was until 1862 part of Lirich and Lippern , which belonged to the Borbeck mayor's office . When the mayor's office in Oberhausen was founded in 1862, the Marienkirche (popularly known as the Heidekirche ) had existed for five years, serving as a branch of St. Dionysius in the north, while the south belonged to the parish of St. Mariae Birth in Mülheim . In 1864 this parish also built an emergency church in Unterstyrum , which was consecrated to St. Joseph and supplied the south of Oberhausen, Alstaden , Dümpten and Styrum . As a result, the building association at Altmarkt in Oberhausen was founded in 1888 within the Rectorate of St. Joseph and from then on asked for permission to convert a hall on the Altmarkt into a church. On February 27, the church council of the parish of St. Mariae Birth allowed the establishment of an emergency church. Already on October 3, 1889, the emergency church Herz Jesu in the northern district was inaugurated. Ten days later the Archbishop of Cologne raised St. Joseph zu Styrum to its own parish. Therefore, St. Joseph set up two rectors' offices: one in the west (Alstaden) and one in the north (Herz Jesu Oberhausen). On October 26th, August Hortmanns was introduced to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as rector.

Foundation of the parish

The building association then tried to raise the parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus community. The main opponent was Pastor Heyden from Styrum. Although he was transferred, his successor Wilhelm Bausch also spoke out against the parish elevation. An attempt was made to bypass the parish of St. Joseph with a letter to the general vicariate of the Archdiocese of Cologne, which actually succeeded: against the will of the pastor of St. Joseph, Archbishop Philipp Krementz elevated Herz Jesu to the parish of August Hortmanns on October 20, 1892 was appointed first pastor.

Around 1900 the number of Catholics belonging to the parish was 12,600, which is why it was decided in 1904 to build a real parish church on the site of the emergency church. By 1906, the increase rose so much that the eastern part was separated as the parish of St. John Evangelist. In 1909, construction work on the parish church of the Heart of Jesus began. At the request of Cardinal Fischer , the church was built in a neo-Gothic style according to the plans of the architect Hermann Wielers from Bochum . After two years, the pastor at the time Andreas Jacquorie was able to inaugurate the Sacred Heart Church on April 30, 1911, but it was not consecrated until July 16, 1912 by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Müller .

The number of Catholics in the Sacred Heart of Jesus rose again until 1920 so that the western heath district was detached from the Sacred Heart of Jesus as the parish of St. Peter .

Second World War

In 1935 the baptistery was inaugurated, in 1937 the missing windows were installed and the church was painted. In addition, a new way of the cross was built under the organ gallery.

In 1942 and early 1943, the Sacred Heart Church was damaged by several bomb attacks and could only be partially repaired. On the night of Easter Tuesday 1943, the Allies carried out a major attack on Oberhausen, in which seven other Oberhausen churches and the Heart of Jesus suffered severe damage: the entire church burned down and large parts of the tower and other masonry were destroyed.

Until the end of 1948, the service had to take place in the Kolping House.

Rebuilding the church

In March 1948, the reconstruction of the Sacred Heart Church began. A new building association, which collected donations, provided day and night watch on the construction site and provided food for the workers, was founded when money was running out after the currency reform . The topping-out ceremony was held on October 16, 1948, and at the end of December the church was put back into operation with a solemn procession. Benches that had been loaned to St. Marien and Sterkrade were brought back, and at the beginning of 1949 a wooden floor under the benches, a heater and a partial organ with 15 registers were purchased.

The situation of the church tower was still unclear at that time, because it was badly weathered and showed serious damage from the acts of war. The building association was dissolved in 1950, and a year later the parish association Herz Jesu was founded as a replacement, which from then on was to take care of the establishment of the Herz-Jesu-Kirche. At the end of 1951 a new altar and a new tabernacle could already be inaugurated and in March 1955 the Archdiocese of Cologne approved financial subsidies for the repair of the tower, which was then completed in October. Instead of the old, high and pointed tower, the Heart of Jesus now had a flat roof with a copper tap as a symbol of vigilance and readiness.

According to plans by Dominikus Böhm , the choir and the side chapels were laid out with Jura marble until 1957, and a new altar, the pulpit and communion benches were built from the same material. Cardinal Joseph Frings inaugurated the high altar on July 21, 1957.

Younger story

In 1958 Herz Jesu was assigned to the newly founded Ruhr Diocese like the entire dean's office Alt-Oberhausen . The three choir windows were installed between 1959 and 1962 before pastor Alfons Karl began extensive exterior renovation and refurbishment in 1969, as the walls were damaged by acts of war, weathering and smog in Oberhausen.

The church was repainted in 1975 for the same reason.

In 1985 the Oberhausen city council applied for the Herz-Jesu-Kirche to be listed as a historical monument. The application was granted and confirmed in 1986 by the city of Oberhausen.

The last significant change to the church building was the purchase of a new organ in 1990, built by the organ builder workshop Georges Heintz, Schiltach, and the design of the prospectus with veil boards by the sculptor Carsten Lewerentz , Staudach-Egerndach.

On April 22, 2007, in the course of the restructuring of the parishes in the diocese of Essen, the parish Herz Jesu was merged with its mother parish St. Joseph Styrum, its daughter parish St. Peter Alstaden and the parish St. Antonius Alstaden to form the large parish Herz Jesu Oberhausen-Mitte. Heart of Jesus has been the parish church since then.

In August 2012, Pacellistraße next to the Herz-Jesu-Kirche was renamed Christoph-Schlingensief-Straße in honor of Christoph Schlingensief , who was born there. At the endeavors of the pastor to Herz Jesu, Dr. Peter Fabritz, the space between the church and the Altmarkt, which was still part of Marktstrasse, was renamed Pacelliplatz, as the eponymous Pope Pius XII. (Eugenio Pacelli) once founded the Ruhr bishopric and was very important for the people in Oberhausen.

The parish Herz Jesu today has 15,469 members. 7,601 Catholics belong to St. Antonius Alstaden, 3,781 Catholics belong to St. Joseph Styrum and 4,087 Catholics belong to the Sacred Heart Congregation itself. As part of the parish development process in the Ruhr bishopric, the parish has to make considerable cost savings. Since 2017 it has been clear that the St. Peter's branch church will have to be abandoned within the next few years. The preservation of the Antoniuskirche until after 2030 is out of the question. However, either the Herz-Jesu-Kirche, the Josephskirche or the parish and youth home St. Joseph must be given up, this decision should be made in 2027.

Bells

The first bells, which were cast in 1911, had to be given to the state for the First World War and melted down for armament. Six new bells were inaugurated as early as 1919, of which the five largest were confiscated by the German Reich in 1940. In 1942 they were dismantled and used for armament purposes.

In 1952, the parish Herz Jesu was awarded one of those bells as compensation for the melted down bells, which had been saved from the eastern German area from the advancing Russian army. It was a bronze bell cast in Danzig in 1676. Six years later, the ringing of bells was automated.

In 1961 the parish council decided to purchase four new bells, which were manufactured by the Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock foundry in Gescher . The bells, which cost 65,000 DM, were consecrated in 1962. The loan bell from Gdansk did not match the overtones of the new bells, so it was moved to the Bell Museum of the Petit u. Foundry in 1993. Gebr. Edelbrock transferred and replaced by a new bell, which now acoustically matches the four new bells.
