The parish church Herz Jesu is the Catholic parish church of Plauen in the Saxon Vogtland . It is located northwest of the historic city center and is an important architectural monument of historicism . It is the main Catholic church of the Plauen deanery and belongs to the diocese of Dresden-Meißen .

Architecture and furnishings

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche is a neo - Romanesque three-aisled basilica without a transept. The 48 m high tower rises above the portal facade. The semicircular apse forms the opposite end . The building material is light sandstone for numerous architectural parts and red brick for blind arcades , pilaster strips , reveals and other structural elements. Cornices , arched windows in various sizes and arrangements, three- and six-pass windows, decorative columns with multiple arches and gables above the portals and two statues of saints on the tower shaft (Apostles Peter and Paul ) give the exterior an elaborate and decorative character.

The interior presents itself in the form of the most recent renovation from 2008 under the construction management of architect Christian Schaufel . The architectural structure was highlighted in style, the original furnishings, if they still exist, were integrated into a liturgy and contemporary reorganization.

The church was built in 1901/02 according to plans by Julius Zeißig , the benediction was on September 28, 1902. The church consecration took place on September 10, 1905. The church and parish were placed under the patronage of the Sacred Heart of Jesus , which in revered in the Catholic liturgy as the center of creation and the source of the sacraments . The rich original painting and the stained glass windows were irreparably damaged in World War II . However, the building itself remained intact. In the post-war decades, several renovation and redesigning measures were carried out, which were partly determined by the limited financial possibilities.

In 2003, a photovoltaic system was installed on the church roof , covering the entire southern half of the central nave roof.
