The heart-leaved pike herb ( Pontederia cordata ) is a species of pike herb ( Pontederia ) in the family of water hyacinth plants (Pontederiaceae).

features

The heart-leaved pike herb is a perennial water plant that reaches heights of 30 to 100 cm. It forms a rhizome as a permanent organ. The lower leaves are sessile and linear, the upper ones have long stalks, their blade is lanceolate to heart-arrow-shaped and they measure 6 to 22 × 7 to 12 centimeters. The flowers are two-lipped, funnel-shaped and only open for one day. The corolla lobes are blue to blue-violet in color, lanceolate and 5 to 8 millimeters long, the upper ones have a two-lobed yellow spot. The fruits are solitary closing fruits, which are enclosed in the hardened perigon tube .

The flowering period extends from June to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Occurrence

The distribution area extends in the warm temperate east of America from Southeast Canada to Minnesota , Florida and Texas , Mexico and Central and South America. Here the plant occurs in the bank reed beds of ponds and lakes down to a water depth of 30 centimeters.

use

The heart-leaved pike herb is used as an ornamental plant for the edges of park and garden ponds. It has probably been in culture since 1579 at the latest.
