La Rochefoucauld (noble family)

Coat of arms of La Rochefoucauld

The house La Rochefoucauld is one of the oldest French noble families of the aristocracy which was first mentioned in the 11th century as the Lords of La Roche. Her ancestral seat is La Rochefoucauld Castle in La Rochefoucauld in the Charente department , which was built in 980 by Fucaldus , likely ancestor of the family, on behalf of the bishops of Angoulême to ward off Norman attacks. Along with the Capetians , Rochechouart and Chalençon - Polignac , the family is one of the oldest still existing noble houses in France.

origin

Without evidence it was claimed that the Rochefoucauld descended from Adémar, called Amaury or Esmerin, a younger son of the family of the Vice Counts of Limoges , alternatively from Hugo I of Lusignan ; the second hypothesis is supported by the coats of arms of both families. André Debord sees the Rochefoucauld as descendants of the House of Montbron in the 12th century. Here, too, it is the coat of arms that suggests this conclusion.

The rule of La Roche was elevated to a barony in the 13th century. The descendants of Foucauld I de la Roche added his name to the family name, which gave rise to the term Rochefoucauld - used for the place, the castle and the family. The castle is now owned by the 14th Duc de La Rochefoucauld; other lines have other historic seats.
