flyCongo (previously Hewa Bora Airways ) was a Congolese airline based in Kinshasa and based at Ndjili Airport .
history
The airline was created in 1994 under the name Hewa Bora Airways through the merger of Zaire Airlines , Zaire Express and Congo Airlines . On November 1, 2007, a cooperation between Hewa Bora Airways, which owns 51% of the shares and Pan African Airlines (a company of Brussels Airlines ) was formed with AirDC .
Hewa Bora Airways has been included in the list of operating bans for the airspace of the European Union . In the past there were exemptions for individual aircraft, but this was no longer the case recently. The airline was the last African airline to operate between the Congo and Europe. After the accident on July 8, 2011, the airline's license was revoked on July 13, 2011.
At the beginning of 2012 the company was renamed to its current name and resumed flight operations on March 24, 2012 after extensive restructuring. To improve the bad image of the former Hewa Bora Airways, the public scrapping of several old aircraft of the company was announced.
In 2013 CAA merged with flyCongo, the name Compagnie Africaine d'Aviation was retained.
Destinations
When operations ceased, flyCongo flew to Gemena , Goma , Kananga , Kisangani , Lubumbashi , Mbandaka , Mbuji-Mayi Airport and the only foreign destination to Johannesburg in addition to its home base at Ndjili Airport . Further destinations of the former Hewa Bora Airways have not yet been included. Their route network also included Abuja and Brussels .

Incidents
- On August 8, 2002, a Hewa Bora Airways L-1011-250 had to turn around after an engine explosion, flew back to Kinshasa / Congo and landed with a far excessive landing weight. The aircraft was badly damaged and had to be written off. There were no victims.
- On April 15, 2008, a Douglas DC-9 of Hewa Bora Airways crashed after taking off from Goma in the province of North Kivu . At least 40 people died and 120 were injured.
- On June 21, 2010, a McDonnell Douglas MD-82 from Hewa Bora Airways, whose left engine and hydraulic system had been severely damaged by debris on the runway when it took off in Kinshasa , had to make an emergency landing with only one engine and no nose landing gear. The machine came off the runway and only came to a stop in the grass next to the runway. All 101 people on board were uninjured in this accident.
- On July 8, 2011, a 45-year-old Boeing 727-022 from Hewa Bora Airways (9Q-COP) coming from Kinshasa had an accident while approaching Kisangani-Bangoka Airport (Democratic Republic of the Congo). 77 of the 115 people on board were killed (see Hewa Bora Airways flight 952 ) . As a result, the flight license was suspended on July 13th.
