In 1904, with the help of Johann Schütte at the Technical University in Danzig, a subsidiary of the shipbuilders' association Latte, established in Berlin in 1878 , was founded. She was called Heylige Frawe Latte and moved to the Technical University in Hanover at the end of the Second World War . 1954 was granddaughter of the same name at the University in Hamburg furnished. After the relocation of ship technology from Hanover to Hamburg and later to the newly founded Technical University Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH), the shipbuilding and marine engineering students were also relocated to the TUHH. Since 1998 the "Heylige Frawe Latte ad Hammaburg" is an association registered with the Hamburg District Court .

Foundation of the daughter Latte

A daughter latte was founded in 1904 by several shipbuilding students at the newly opened Gdansk University, which was personally inaugurated by Kaiser Wilhelm II . It was the second German technical university to teach shipbuilding subjects. The students of the mother and daughter organization of the Latte stayed in contact and held religious festivals together. The latte in Danzig also included the aircraft construction students and led, among other things, to an "Luftgrafschaft" in Braunschweig . With the conquest of Danzig in 1945 the club life ended. The last Danzig master of the order, Hans S. Kannt, left the city shortly before the Red Army marched in .

In West Germany , the reconstruction of the study of shipbuilding and marine engineering after the Second World War was carried out by Schnadel in Hamburg and by Illies and Hansen in Hanover. For example, some of the former Gdansk professors were appointed to the TH Hannover , who worked to enable the study of ship technology in Hannover as the successor to Gdansk. In 1949 Hansen and Illies received teaching assignments in Hanover . In 1951, the states of Hamburg and Lower Saxony signed a state treaty on the joint training of ship technicians in Hanover and Hamburg. On April 30, 1951, the Heyligen Frau Latte in Berlin announced the establishment of a subsidiary in Hanover. She was baptized in December . The last Danzig master of the order, Hans Kannt, provided a suitable baptismal gift as godfather. According to old Danzig tradition, he gave the person to be baptized a trident , sword and armored bolt for the Holy Order's Capitularium (HOK). He had these insignia reproduced at the Bremerhaven Seebeck shipyard.

Heylige Frawe Latte ad Hammaburg

The knighthood in Hamburg was brought into being in 1954 by the Hanoverian Latte. After ship technology moved from Hanover to the University of Hamburg , it was merged at the University of Hamburg in 1984. The Hamburger Latte moved again in 2001, when shipbuilding training was relocated from the University of Hamburg to the Technical University in Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH). The marine engineering students, previously known as the Knighthood of Harburg , united with the university's shipbuilders. It has existed since then under the name "Heylige Frawe Latte ad Hammaburg" (HFLatte eV) and also performs the function of the student council . The students of the HF Latte continue to live the old traditions such as baptism and religious ceremonies together with former students, with the professors who teach in ship technology and emeritus professors as well as the scientific staff. In addition to their studies, some students from the student council also take on tasks such as the role of master of the order, the chancellor and the ceremony, organizing, among other things, the baptism, the summer festival and the religious festival.

HF Latte cultivates cooperation with industry, for example with the arms company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems .

The traditional baptism of the new shipbuilding students takes place on a Friday in July. At the following summer festival, the baptism certificates are awarded and celebrated with students from other student bodies, alumni and university employees. A ceremony during this festival is that the HOK is thrown into the campus pond by the newly baptized.

Annual religious festival in Harburg

Invitation from Hamburger Latte to the religious festival in 1992

For the annual order festival in Harburg on the 1st Friday in December, delegations of students from other universities active in marine technology arrive and hand over gifts. In addition, many of the former Hanoverians and Hamburg students of shipbuilding and marine engineering who work in business and industry come to celebrate this celebration together. At these religious festivals, awards and medals are awarded for good cooperation and high commitment to the latte. More rarely, honorary titles are awarded for special merits for good teaching, which is associated with the presentation of a certificate.
