Hideki Mutō ( Japanese 武 藤 英 紀 , Mutō Hideki ; born October 6, 1982 in Chūō , Tokyo , Japan ) is a Japanese automobile racing driver . He has been running under the name Hideki Mutoh since 2007 . From 2007 to 2011 he was active in the IndyCar Series . His best IndyCar placement was a second place. In the overall standings, tenth place was his best result.

Career

Mutō began his motorsport career in 1996 in karting . In 1998 the Japanese moved to Europe and initially competed in the Formula Vauxhall winter series. In 1999 he started in the regular championship and finished tenth. In 2000, Mutō switched to the British Formula Ford for two years . After finishing twelfth in his first season, he finished 19th overall in 2001. He also competed in the European Formula Ford in 2001 and finished third in this championship.

In 2002 Mutō returned to Asia and competed in the Dream Formula . After he had achieved the runner-up title in his first season, he secured the championship title of this series in his second season with 8 wins from 11 races. In 2004 he switched to the Japanese Formula 3 championship and finished the season with two podium finishes in ninth place overall. In 2005 he stayed in this series and improved with three wins to third place overall behind the champions João Paulo de Oliveira and Kazuki Nakajima . In 2006 the Japanese switched to Formula Nippon . While his team-mate Loïc Duval achieved fourth place in the drivers' standings, Muto only got one point and finished the season in 14th place. At the same time, he started in the Super GT and finished eleventh overall with a win.

In 2007 the Japanese moved to North America and competed in the IRL Pro Series under the name Hideki Mutoh for Panther Racing . Mutoh won two races and only had to admit defeat to champion Alex Lloyd at the end of the season . At the race in Joliet , he did not compete in the IRL Pro Series, but in the IndyCar Series . He immediately achieved the fastest lap and finished the race in eighth place. In the overall standings he was 25th. In 2008 he moved to Andretti Green Racing , where he replaced the master Dario Franchitti, who had migrated to the NASCAR series . Mutoh finished a few races among the top ten drivers and achieved second place in Newton, the best Japanese placement in the IndyCar Series to date. He finished the season as the best newcomer in tenth place overall. In 2009 , Mutoh stayed with Andretti Green Racing. He was able to build on the performances from the previous season and achieved his best result with a third place in Newton. At the end of the season he finished eleventh overall.

In 2010 , Mutoh left Andretti Green Racing, after being the team's worst regular driver in both seasons, and moved to Newman / Haas / Lanigan Racing . But the former top team could not build on earlier successes this season. After a few races, co-owner Mike Lanigan also left the team, whose name was then changed back to Newman / Haas Racing . The former regular driver Graham Rahal had to leave the team temporarily after losing his sponsor and was only used in the second half of the season. So Mutoh was the team's only driver for half the season. Without having achieved a placement among the top ten pilots, Mutoh finished 18th overall.

In 2011 Mutoh returned to Japan. In formula racing, he completed four races there in Motegi . He competed there three times in the Formula Nippon , once in the IndyCar Series .

At the end of the 2011 season, he left the North American motorsport scene and has competed in the Super GT ever since .
