Abscissum hieracium is a kind from the family of the daisy family (Asteraceae). It is native to southern North America as well as Central America.

description

Hieracium abscissum is an herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 40 to 75, occasionally more, centimeters. The upright stems are mostly bare, but sometimes also have fine but rough hairs that are 3 to 6 millimeters long. The stem base is bald, star-shaped or hairy with glands, but can also have the same fine, rough hairs as the rest of the stem.

At the base of the stem there are three to twelve, sometimes more basal leaves , while one to six leaves branch off from the stem. The leaf blade is at a length of 3.5 to 20 centimeters and a width of 1 to 3 centimeters upside-lanceolate to lanceolate. The base of the spreader is wedge-shaped to truncated while the tip of the spreader tapers to a point and the edges of the spreader are usually whole, but occasionally also toothed. Both the top and the bottom of the leaves are covered with 2 to 3 millimeters long, fine, rough hair.

The flowering period extends from April and July to August. The total inflorescences consist of five to sixty ribbed , cup-shaped partial inflorescences . The inflorescence stem is covered with fine, rough, star-shaped and glandular hair. The more or less bell-shaped involucre contains 13 to 18 bracts that are 6 to 8 millimeters long and 4 to 5 millimeters wide. The flower heads contain 20 to 24 yellow ray-flowers , which are 6 to 9 millimeters long. The black to red-brown achenes are columnar with a length of 2 to 3 millimeters. They have a pappus made up of 36 to 40 white or straw-colored bristle hairs.

Occurrence

The natural range of Hieracium abscissum is in southern North America and in Central America. It stretches from Arizona and New Mexico through Mexico to Central America .

Hieracium abscissum thrives at altitudes of 2000 to 2600 meters. The species grows in disturbed areas as well as in clearings in pine , oak and pine-oak mixed forests.
