description

Vegetative characteristics

Hieracium maccoshiana is an herbaceous plant that reaches heights of up to 50 centimeters. The narrow and robust stems are pale green and tinted purple in the lower part. They are sparsely haired with star-shaped trichomes , especially in the upper part . In the lower area, the stems are bare or densely covered with simple, glandular trichomes.

The few, basal leaves weather before the flowering period or are rarely durable, but can also be missing entirely. Its petiole, which is hairy with numerous, simple trichomes, is widened and winged at the base. The leaf blade is elliptical to approximately rounded with a tapering blade base and a blunt to prickly-pointed upper end. The leaf margins are finely to roughly serrated. The upper side of the leaf is bare or, like the underside of the leaf, is hairy with a few simple, glandular trichomes. The stalk leaves are 2 to 10 centimeters long and 0.8 to 3.5 centimeters wide, with their size decreasing to the top of the stem. The top of the leaf is pale green and the underside of the leaf is paler than the top. The lowest of the stem leaves are divided into a winged, almost stem-encompassing petiole and an elliptical leaf blade with a pointed blade base and a blunt to pointed upper end. Their leaf margins are serrated or toothed sharp and irregularly. The leaves in the central stem area are sessile and have an elliptical leaf blade with a rounded base that almost encompasses the stem and a blunt to pointed tip. Their leaf margins are serrated or sharp and serrated irregularly with large or small teeth. The leaves in the upper stem area are sessile and have a lanceolate leaf blade with a wedge-shaped, almost stem-enclosing blade base and a pointed to pointed upper end. Their leaf margins are serrated or slightly serrated. All of the stem leaves are sparsely covered with star-shaped hairs on both sides.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from late July to August. Hieracium maccoshiana presumably reproduces apomictically , with some plants producing some pollen .

The total inflorescences contain two to twelve cup-shaped partial inflorescences. The semi-upright, narrow inflorescence stem is 1 to 5 centimeters long and sparsely to densely covered with star-shaped, dark trichomes. The flower heads have a truncated base and are 2 to 4.5 centimeters in diameter. The blackish green involucre contains several blackish green colored bracts , which are linear-lanceolate with a blunt upper end with a length of 9 to 11 millimeters and a width of 1.7 to 2.5 millimeters. They are sparsely covered with often bushy, dark hair. The pits at the bottom of the basket have elongated serrated edges. The ray- florets , bare at the tip, are yellow. The stylus is discolored in the herbarium .

The blackish-brown achenes are 4 to 4.5 millimeters long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.

Hieracium maccoshiana localities

Occurrence

Hieracium maccoshiana has so far only been found in four locations in the Scottish county of Sutherland . These are a ravine and a burn area near the Rhiconich , two other burn areas on the Coire Dùail and the Foinaven, and a location on the rocks at Creag na h-Uidhe . The occurrence on the Ben Loyal is considered questionable and requires closer investigation.

Hieracium maccoshiana thrives at altitudes of 130 to 414 meters. It grows on rocks in canyon walls as well as on rocky subsoil at the canyon floor and along rivers out of the reach of larger herbivores such as deer and sheep .

Systematics

It was first described as Hieracium maccoshiana in 2011 by Timothy Charles Guy Rich in PhytoKeys , number 3, page 1. The specific epithet maccoshiana honors David J. McCosh , who mapped the Hieracium species of the British Isles for over 30 years .

According to the first description, Hieracium maccoshiana belongs to the genus Hieracium of the Alpestria section .
