Hieronymus Tilesius
Hieronymus Tilesius (born November 20, 1529 in Hirschberg , Principality of Schweidnitz , † September 17, 1566 in Mühlhausen / Thuringia ) was a German Lutheran theologian and reformer from Mühlhausen and Eger , Kingdom of Bohemia .
Life
Tilesius comes from the noble family of the Tilisch von Tilenau, who have lived in Silesia since around 1380 . Since the family had many children, many descendants did not pursue the nobility reference any further and established themselves in the middle-class milieu of Silesia. His father was the mayor of Hirschberg Melchior Tilisch von Tilenau and his mother was the mayor's daughter Anna (née Winkler). Initially he attended school in his hometown. At the age of fifteen he became a student of the famous Silesian teacher Valentin Potsendorf , who at that time was the head of the grammar school in Goldberg . This encouraged Tilesius to study at a university.
He then moved to the University of Leipzig for the summer semester of 1548 , where he matriculated. The course began at the philosophical faculty, where Georg Joachim Rheticus familiarized him with natural science subjects and Bernhard Ziegler with linguistic studies. Thus instructed, he acquired during the summer semester 1549 the Baccalariat philosophy and in the winter semester 1552 a master's degree of the seven liberal arts . Ziegler advised him to devote himself to studying theology. Therefore, he held a preacher position at the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig and in 1554 acquired the academic degree of a baccalaurus in theology.
In 1554 he moved to the Zörbiger town church of St. Mauritius as senior pastor . On November 28, 1555, he took up a position as pastor and superintendent in Delitzsch , which he exchanged in late September 1557 with the position of superintendent and pastor at the St. Blasiikirche in Mühlhausen. Tilesius brought about the reintroduction of evangelical principles in the city after counter-Reformation efforts. The main focus of his theological activity was the reorganization of the community and school system. But he was not only active in Mühlhausen.
His services were needed in the Bohemian town of Eger , for which he was given leave of absence from Mühlhausen from November 19, 1564 to February 18, 1565. Through his 34 evangelical sermons held in Eger, he made a significant contribution to the introduction of evangelical teaching. That is why he is listed in the general literature as a reformer by Mühlhausen and Eger. In his last lifetime he devoted himself to the publication of Dietrich Schernberg's game by Frau Jutten, which appeared in Eisleben in 1565. It deals with the mythical theme of Popess Joan .
After his death, an epitaph was built for him in the Marienkirche in Mühlhausen . In 1569 Lucas Cranach the Younger created an epitaph painting for him, Christ on the cross , which also depicts his family.
