Highlands is a city and CDP in Harris County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located in southeast Texas, in the east of the county, in the east about 110 km from Louisiana , in the southeast 58 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has a total area of 17.0 km², of which 1.0 km² is water.
history
The place was named after its location on the San Jacinto River , as the east bank of the river was higher than the west bank. 1908 got the place through the Beaumont, Sour Lake and Western Railway connection to the railway network and 1929 the first post office was opened.

According to the 2000 census, 7,089 people in 2,564 households and 1,976 families lived here. The population density was 443.6 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 90.18% White, 1.61% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 5.28% other ethnic groups. About 2.00% were mixed race and 13.01% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,564 households, 37.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.7% of these were married couples living together. 11.9% were single mothers and 22.9% were non-families. 19.4% of all households were single households and there were people living in 7.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.14.
27.8% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.4% 18 to 24, 29.4% 25 to 44, 23.6% 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all ages, there were 100.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 96.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 41,288 USD , and the median income for a family 49,655 USD. Males had a median income of $ 41,926 versus females of $ 25,226. The per capita income was $ 18,556. 9.8% of the population and 6.7% of families are below the poverty line.
