The Hilgerkapelle (formerly also: Maria Dorfen ) is a chapel in the Roman Catholic parish of St. Andreas in Berchtesgaden in Bavaria in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising .

Buildings and history

The Hilger Chapel in the late Baroque style was built in the course of the Berchtesgaden Counter-Reformation under Prince Provost Julius Heinrich von Rehlingen-Radau in 1725. On May 24, 1867, it was transferred free of charge to the then still independent municipality of Salzberg , which has been a district of the municipality of Berchtesgaden since 1972 .

During renovations in 1957, the altar from 1778 was uncovered.

In the course of the total renovation from 1981 to 1982, the tin roof was removed in favor of a clapboard covering. Thanks to donations from the Rupertigau Lions Club , in 1982 a second bell with the tone "As" was added to the hitherto only bell with the tone "F".

The discovery in 1991 of a basket with old grave balls as well as a small shrine with a reclining wooden Jesus led to the realization that in the Hilger Chapel the replica of a holy grave had already invited for silent contemplation in earlier times . After a few other finds, the restored and partially completely rebuilt “Holy Grave” has been set up in the Hilger Chapel every year since 1994 from Maundy Thursday to Holy Saturday .

On July 7th, 2014 the tower of the chapel was badly damaged by a lightning strike and in particular the roof structure of the tower was "downright split". As early as the following year it was reported that the tower was "shining again" because the building was insured.
