It belongs to the parish of St. Michael Strub and thus to the Roman Catholic parish association Stiftsland Berchtesgaden in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising .

history

The parish church of St. Michael-Strub was built in 1961 and 1962. The reason for the construction was the large number of refugees and displaced persons who were initially housed in Strub in the buildings of the youth hostel, the Bundeswehr barracks and in the buildings that are today known as Insula . After the Jägerkaserne was again occupied by the German armed forces in 1957 and the associated increase in the number of inhabitants, the original building plans were revised and the church was designed to be a third larger. The site of the "Weihererhäusl" (formerly Landhaus Lorrain) was chosen as their building site.

The construction of the church was initiated by Pastor Schüller from Berchtesgaden, who also laid the foundation stone on September 3, 1961. The church was consecrated by Julius Cardinal Döpfner on September 29th and 30th, 1961, 14 days before the beginning of the Second Vatican Council . Georg M. Schlüter, who was still a chaplain at the time , was responsible for the building project itself . Later, Schlüter was also the parish vicar and, from 1966, the pastor of the newly founded parish of St. Michael Strub and worked for it for a total of 41 years until 2002.

The architecture of the church building and its patronage of St. Michael were closely linked to the events of the time. Analogous to the irreconcilably opposing political and social blocks at the time, the contrasts clashed in both the structural design and the original color scheme. Whitewashed, plastered surfaces contrasted with gray concrete elements, which found a further contrast in the wood of the parapet and the pews. The eponymous Archangel Michael is also the patron saint of the Bundeswehr and thus points to the building as a garrison church . Since the foundation stone was laid and the church was built shortly after the construction of the Berlin Wall began on August 13, 1961, Cardinal Döpfner, as the former Archbishop of Berlin, was "particularly pleased with the naming".

In 2005 the interior of the church was redesigned, which is no longer characterized by hard “pointed” fronts, but rather elegant shapes and coordinated tones.

Parish

The parish church of Saint Michael in Strub belonged from 2000 together with the parish church of the Sacred Heart in the Gnotschaft Bischofswiesen, the pilgrimage church of Maria Hilf in Loipl and the parish church of St. John of Nepomuk in Winkl to the Roman Catholic Parish Association Bischofswiesen . On June 1, 2019, this parish association was transferred to the parish association Stiftsland Berchtesgaden , which has since included almost all Roman Catholic parishes in the Berchtesgadener Land .
