Hirschbergkoppe

The Hirschbergkoppe is a 538.5 m high mountain in western Central Hesse . It is the highest point in the municipality of Herborn .

The mountain is called Hirschberger Koppe on site .

Remains of a rampart with embankments can be seen on the Koppe; it is assumed that these are traces of Celtic settlement.

geography

The mountain is located on the eastern edge of the Westerwald (i. E. S.) (natural subunit 322.0 'Westerwälder Basalthochfläche'), 5½ km south-southwest of Herborn (city center), close to the winding state road from the Merkenbach to Beilstein district .

The mountain is the corner point of two mountain ranges:
* a basaltic ridge between Rehbachtal in the north and Ulmbachtal in the south, which runs west- south -west over Hintere and Vordere Lay and Scheuertberg to the Buschhorn (534 m) south of Driedorf , and
* the wooded peaks between unterer Dill and Ulmbachtal, which extend southeast to the Lahn west of Wetzlar (including Hinstein , Kesselberg with Dianaburg and Bieler Burg).

On the mountain, the basalt plateau breaks off to the north into the lower Rehbachtal (280 m above sea level) and to the east into the Dill valley (190 m above sea level).

Mountain description

Except on the north side, the Koppe is completely forested, mainly with beech stands. The summit area was designated as a 'core area nature conservation' (natural forest) and withdrawn from forest management.

The northern flank is largely taken up by the Hirschberg cattle pasture . There is a memorial to the cowherd Wilhelm Blecker in the upper area.

Below is the village of Hirschberg .

Waters

South of the height are the sources of the Fleisbach , which sends its water down a steep meadow valley, passes the village of Fleisbach and flows into the Dill between Sinn and Edingen .

At the foot of the north-east slope the two source streams of the Merkenbach arise , which unite in front of the place of the same name, flow through Merkenbach with pipes, rise again to the surface below and then taken up by the lower Rehbach at the old 'Rehmühle' (today Berkenhoff / 'bedra') become.

hike

Two hiking trails lead past the Koppe: H2 (Herborn - Merkenbach - 'Kniebrecher' - Um die Koppe - Viehweide - Hirschberg - Hörbach - Herborn; 19 km) and H12 ('Laternenweg'; Hirschberg - Greifenstein (town); 6 km) . A memorial stone on the Laternenweg commemorates the forester Julius Bartholomae who was shot by poachers in 1919.
