Hirzbach is a district of the town of Leutenberg in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia .

geography

The village of Hirzbach is located west of the Sormitz river in a small, forest-free area with good connections to federal highway 90 . The local situation is drained by the Hirzbach , which first flows into the Kiesbach and then into the Sormitz. Because of the steep gradient, Hirzbach has one of the steepest village streets in Thuringia.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document on June 21, 1398. The place belonged to the Grafschaft Schwarzburg-Leutenberg and after its extinction from 1564 to 1918 to the supremacy of the Grafschaft or the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt .

In 1945 there were 28 houses, 24 farmers and a total of 165 residents in Hirzbach. A year later, the place had 187 inhabitants due to the reception of displaced persons from the former German eastern areas. The town, which is characterized by agriculture, forestry and tourism , followed the East German path of development because it belonged to the GDR. Today the forms of work have been successfully adapted to the new property relations. The village is a destination for everyone.

geology

In 1888, while mapping the area around Leutenberg, the geologist Ernst Zimmermann discovered a rock of igneous origin that is unique for the region. It was kersantite with a small fracture, which made it possible to mine large blocks. The deposit located northwest of Hirzbach am Binzigshügel was then mined in a large quarry. Because the kersantite was very easy to grind and polish, it was used for making tombstones. But paving stones, gravel and split for road construction were also extracted. In 1959 the work in the quarry ended.
