The Hlöðufell is a tabular volcano in the southwest of Iceland . Its volume is given by Eason et al. (2015) estimated at 3.9 km 3 .

description

It is a tabular volcano 1188 m high, which is located between the inhabited areas of Biskupstunga and Laugardalur and the Langjökull glacier shield in the highlands of Iceland .

The mountain is about 5 km long and consists of palagonite with an olivine basalt layer on the summit.

There is also a layer of firn snow that does not give way in summer.

As is often the case with table mountains, the summit is girdled by steep rock faces, but can be climbed. It was carved out by the glaciers of the Ice Age .

Rockclimbing

The best way to approach the mountain is from Skjaldbreiðarvegur LF338, which connects Kaldadalsvegur Sx550 with Kjalvegur Sx35 , and Hlöðuvallavegur LF337. The best ascent route leads from the hut of the Icelandic Trekking Association on the left side of a gorge that descends on the south side of the mountain.

Surroundings

The area around the mountain is covered by layers of lava. The top ones come mainly from three volcanoes: Skjaldbreiður , Sköflung and Eldborgir á Lambahrauni .

In the southwest below the mountain there is a hut belonging to the Ferðafélag Íslands hiking club . There is a deep gorge above the house. The climb up the mountain is easiest if you stick west of the gorge.

To the south of the mountain is the Rótasandur sand plain . The river Brúará has its source there .

One of the most beautiful and now protected natural caves Islands, Jörundur , located in Lambahraun - lava field in eastern Hlöðufell.
