The Church of St. Vasilije Ostroški ( Serbian : Црква Светог Василија Острошког, Crkva Svetog Vasilija Ostroškog) in Avtovac , a village in the Opština Gacko , is a Serbian Orthodox parish in Bosnia and Herzegovina .

The church, built from 1907 to 1908, is the parish church of the parish Avtovac in the dean's office of Mostar - Nevesinje of the Zahumlje-Herzegovina-and-Coastal eparchy of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The church is dedicated to St. Vasilije Ostroški the miracle worker .

The church stands in the center of the village of Avtovac, which has around 300 inhabitants, in the Opština Gacko in the north-eastern part of Eastern Herzegovina . Avtovac is located around 5 km southeast of the municipality capital Gacko on the eastern edge of the Gatačko polje . Not far from the church, the Mušnica river flows through the center of the village.

History and architecture

The Church of St. Vasilije Ostroški was built from 1907 to 1908, during the Austro-Hungarian annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and was consecrated in 1908 at the time of the then Metropolitan of the Metropolitan Zahumlje - Herzegovina Petar (Zimonjić).

The church is a single nave stone church building with an altar - apse in the east and a steeple in the west. In the 1960s, the 20th century , in socialist Yugoslavia , the steeple was added to the west side of the church. The Church of St. Vasilije Ostroški has not been renewed since then.

A shoe of St. Vasilije Ostroški has been in the church as a relic since 1996, when the relics of St. Vasilije Ostroški were redressed and were carried through Herzegovina in a solemn procession. St. Vasilije Ostroški rests in the Serbian Orthodox Monastery of Ostrog in Montenegro , which he personally founded , in the Opština Danilovgrad . The main worship services take place in the Church of the Patron's Slavic and Christ's Transfiguration .

The parish of Avtovac includes villages from three parishes in two countries. There are eleven Serbian Orthodox churches in the parish.

From the municipality of Bileća these are Korita , Rioca , Brestice and Hodžići . From the municipality of Gacko there are the following villages: Avtovac, Stepen , Pržine , Danići , Zagradci , Lipnik , Samobor , Gareva , Dobrelji , Stari Dulići , Novi Dulići , Kazanci , Vratkovići , Miholjače , Jasenik , Berušica and Žanjevica . As well as the village of Brljevo , which is located in the Opština Plužine in Montenegro.

Miodrag Vrtikapa has been the priest of the Church since 2012.
